We were honored to join the Urban Ecology Center (UEC) in celebrating the grand re-opening of its Washington Park branch on Saturday, February 1. This exciting milestone marks the completion of a transformative renovation and expansion project that will greatly enhance UEC’s ability to serve the community.
With the newly renovated facility, UEC plans to more than double the capacity of its Neighborhood Environmental Education Project, expanding from 13 to 31 schools over the next three years. The improved space will allow for increased programming, deeper community engagement, and expanded environmental education opportunities for local students and residents.
The grand re-opening event featured remarks from UEC Executive Director Jen Hense, Washington Park Branch Director Terry Evans, Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Executive Director of Milwaukee County Parks, and State Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde. The celebration also included a land dedication, an acknowledgment of Black History Month, a tree unveiling, testimonies from residents and program participants, and the official kickoff of UEC’s Winterfest, a beloved community event.
Key enhancements to the Washington Park branch include:
A new Observation Deck offering elevated views of the park and natural surroundings.
An 850-square-foot Land Stewardship Storage Building to support conservation efforts.
A 10,000-square-foot Service Yard to improve operational efficiency.
A redesigned 118-stall green parking lot, transforming the county lot into a sustainable space.
Upgrades to the service road, pedestrian access, exterior lighting, and park signage, creating a more welcoming and accessible environment.
We are proud to have served as the general contractor for this impactful project, working alongside Quorum Architects, who led the design efforts.
At VJS, we are committed to building spaces that strengthen communities. The enhanced Washington Park branch will be a vital hub for environmental education, community programs, and outdoor exploration for years to come. We look forward to seeing the lasting impact this revitalized space will have on the Milwaukee community.
