Hmong American Peace Academy (HAPA) has continually updated its campus to align with its mission of providing rigorous academics, character development, and Hmong cultural values, preparing students for success in higher education and careers. Our latest project involved installing a new HVAC system in the primary/middle school section of the campus. Given HAPA’s location in a dense residential area on Milwaukee’s north side, and the addition of a high school on its campus, we needed a strategy to install the rooftop units (RTUs). Our team collaborated with mechanical partner IKM to devise an innovative solution: using a helicopter to efficiently place the rooftop units.

The HVAC installation took place one week before the school year began, with HAPA staff on-site preparing for the new term. Given the school's residential location, our team collaborated with IKM and Midwest Helicopter to develop a comprehensive plan, including identifying a landing area, staging zone for the rooftop units, setting order, flight paths, and a restricted area perimeter. Staff were advised to arrive later or stay in the high school cafeteria during the lifts, while security ensured no unauthorized access to the building. Nearby streets were also temporarily closed for safety.
The helicopter efficiently set seven RTUs in just 20 minutes. In contrast, using a crane would have taken almost a full day due to access challenges. This approach not only saved time but also reduced labor costs significantly.
This innovative approach highlights our commitment to finding the most effective solutions for our clients, even in challenging environments. By leveraging a helicopter for the installation, we minimized disruption, ensured safety, and delivered a complex project efficiently.
